Padmashri Dr. Mukut Minz | Stalwart in Transplant Surgery

A veteran in Kidney Transplant whose reputation precedes him because of his work as a surgeon, an as academician and Researcher. He has performed over 3500 successful Kidney Transplant breaking all boundaries and has numerous popular publication in different field of medicine. With his vast experience and the best known kidney transplant surgeon in India, He headed the Kidney Transplat Surgery of Indian Foreign Minister Smt Shushma Swaraj.
Prof. (Dr.) Mukut Minz had been Prof & Head, Department of Renal Transplant Surgery, PGI, Chandigarh, and has been a stalwart in Transplant Surgery in the country. He joined PGI in 1980 and has over 30 years of experience in this field. He was elevated to the post of Senior Professor in 2008 and member of Governing Body of PGI in 2015. He received advanced training in cadaver organ retrieval and transplantation at various centres/universities of Norway, Sweden, Germany and USA. He set up a new department of Renal Transplant Surgery in PGI and performed over 3,300 kidney transplants. Dr Minz successfully established Combined Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Programme for type 1 diabetics with kidney failure in PGI, which is currently a leading pancreas transplant centre in North India. Under his mentorship the department has also performed several complicated dialysis access procedures (AV Fistulas for hemodialysis). He has trained over 30 transplant surgeons, many of whom are holding academic positions in India, US, UK and Australia. He has been a Visiting Professor in various universities in India and has been conferred several awards and honours

In early 1980s, Dr. Mukut Minz realised the importance of organ transplant in saving lives of patients. He performed over 3,500 kidney transplants and six kidney plus pancreas transplants in his service spanning over 36 years.

It is said that doctors are angels sent on Earth by God. Hon'ble External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj is full of praise and thankfulness for Dr. Mukut Minz who performed the successful kidney transplant surgery on her at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

On January 26 2017, Dr. Mukut Minz is awarded India’s 4th highest civilian award the prestigious ‘Padma Shri Award’by the Hon'ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee, for his distinguished contribution to the field of Medicine.

Dr. Mukut Minz has over 50 peer-reviewed publications on renal transplant. Dr. Minz is an avid writer himself and enjoys encouraging resident and fellow contributions to the medical literature.

Pioneered Department of Renal Transplant Surgery, PGIMER Chandigarh

Dr. Mukut Minz started a special intensive care unit (ICU) and operation theatre (OT), all alone, dedicated to transplant patients in late 90s. In 2005, the centre was converted into a department of renal transplant surgery.

He has trained over 30 transplant surgeons, many of whom are holding academic positions in India, the US, the UK and Australia and has been a visiting professor in various universities.

Dr. Mukut Minz completed his long innings and retired from post as Head, at PGIMER Chandigarh on 30th July 2016. Presently Dr. Mukut is serving in the capacity of Director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Surgery, at FORTIS HOSPITAL Mohali.

On being a Padma Shri Awardee 2017

I have maintained diligence and honesty throughout my career spanning for over 36 years. I am thankful to Union government for honoring me with Padma Shri and giving me recogntion for my contributions in Organ Transplantion. It’s a big encouragement for me and I am very happy.

About his early days in the area of Kidney Transplantation

Nobody [doctors] wanted a transplant in those days of pre-1980s, as results were not good. As a surgeon, you would want to see your patients improving.But transplant did not excite many. People used to laugh at me when I chose transplantation. Then they made fun of me, but now, almost everybody wants to opt for transplant.

How was it starting a new Department at PGIMER Chandigarh ?

It took a quite some time to establish the department. I started it all alone, but now there is a good team, ready to take it to greater heights.

Can you share your feelings on performing a successful transplant Surgery on Smt. Sushma Swaraj ?

I am happy that our Minister of External Affairs, Smt. Sushma Swaraj did not travel abroad but chose to get her transplant done in the country, which reinforces the faith on Indian doctors and hospitals.

What is your approach when you operate a VVIP like Ministers? Do you feel extra pressure ?

I have conducted more than 3500 kidney transplants. It's all the same for everybody. There is no difference. When you deal with a patient's life, you are bound to use the same scientific and medical method that you have been trained to do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Are our organ transplant laws commensurate with time?

We have very robust Organ transplant Act. Though many patients complain the procedures as tiresome, I don't agree with them. The checks and balances in the Transplantation of Human Organs (amendment) Act, 2011, is needed to check exploitation of poor people by the rich patients. What I feel is, more needs to be done to encourage cadaver donation so that shortage of organs is met with. There is a critical gap. Only about 3% end-stage kidney patients get a donor to undergo transplant.
